Anupshahr is a city and a municipal board in the district of Bulandshahr in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. According to the census of 2001, the population of the Anupshahr city amounts to 23,676. The average elevation of Anupshahr is 182 meters or 597 feet. The literacy rate of this city is lower than that of the national literacy rate and sums up to only 57%.
The history of the city can be traced back to the era of 1200 B.C. The city of Anupshahr is at a very short distance from the capital of Pandavas, namely Indraprasth and Hastinapur. After the decline of the kingdom of Hastinapur, the place called Ahar, which was situated in the north of Anupshahr, became a very important place for the Pandavas. In the later decades the Mughal monarch Jahangir presented this region to another monarch called Aniroy who saved the life of Jahangir during his hunting expedition. In the course of time he also made this place his capital and after sometime he made a fort in this spot. It was then the city derived its present name Anupshahr. During the reign of King Tarasingh who was also the 8th generation of king Aniroy, the city of Anupshahr made a good progress. This region was famous for Ayurveda and boats business in this era. During the first want of independence in the history of India`s freedom movement in 1857 Anupshahr did not remain far behind in the popular explosion against the colonial rule of the British. Pandit Narayan Sharma carried one resolution message from Aligarh on the 10th of May in the year 1857 to Bulandshahar. The first popular alarm struggle is believed to have been taken in the district of Bulandshahr by the brave nationalists. They also participated in the destruction of telegraph offices and government buildings as they symbolized the monarchy of the British Lords. The city of Anupshahr is truly an angler`s paradise and the host of spiritual tourist attractions makes one`s stay in the place memorable forever. Anupshahr is a place with much religious significance as well. The city of Anupshahr also has a close association with that of the religion of the Sikhs. The seventh Guru of the Sikh faith was married to Sulakhani who was the daughter of Daya Ram of Anupshahr in the district of Bulandshahr. It is from Anupshahr only that Swami Paramanandaji gradually moved on foot as a wandering saint to Khurja. Anupshahr is also the site of many old temples. Reaching Anupshahr is also very convenient in the recent times. This town is well connected with the major metros and the other Indian cities by both roads and railways.
