
Located on the banks of the river Indravati, the panoramic city of Jagdalpur is situated in the Bastar district in Chhattisgarh. It serves as the municipality and administrative headquarters of the Bastar district, which was the capital of the princely state of Bastar. The area is known for the ancient wooden handicrafts popular amongst locals and foreign tourists. Jagdalpur has been mentioned in the Hindu epic Ramayana by Rishi Valmiki and the famous Dandakaranya through which Lord Ram is known to have passed. Rishi Valmiki's ashram has also been known to have existed here. The princely state of Bastar was known to have been established by the Kakatiya ruler, Pratap Rudra's brother, Annam Deo, who left Warangal and founded his own kingdom in 1420s AD. Jagdalpur became the capital of Bastar kingdom under the rule of Dalpat Deo and over the years, wars of succession took place and finally, in 1948 it ceded with the Indian Union.
