The panoramic Dantewada district is located in the southern Bastar region within the state of Chhattisgarh. It came into being in 1998 and the whole district is covered in dense lush greenery with rolling green hills and meandering fast flowing rivers Indravati, Shabhari and Godavari. Dantewada is known for its Saal and teak forest areas and other natural resources. The rustic tribal region has rich cultural and historic ties, which can be seen even today. In ancient times, Dantewada was known as Tarlapala and Dantawali as mentioned on stone inscriptions found in the region. Ramayana mentions Lord Ram taking shelter in Dandkaranya during his exile while the area was known to be inhabited by Chhindak Nags, the ancestors of the Gonds. It has been mentioned in ancient scriptures that the tribal clans were ruling since 600 BC and the other major ruling dynasties included the Chalukyas and the Nala dynasty.
