Dindigul District was formed from the Madurai District in the year 1985. The Erode and the Karur districts, on the east by the Tiruchirappalli District, on the southeast and the south by the Madurai District, on the southeast by the Theni District, and on the west by the state of Kerala and the Coimbatore District surround the district on the north. The rivers flowing through this district are Kodaganaru, Palar, Manjalar, Kuthiraiyar, Maruthanathi, Varadhamanathi, Porandalar, Amaravathi and Porandalar. The dams built in this district include the Dharmathupatti Dam, the Kamarajar Dam, the Manjalar Dam, the Marudhanadhi, the Pannapatti, the Parapalar Dam, the Palar- Porandalar Dam, the Varadamanadhi Dam and the Kuthiraiyar Dam. The Dindigul District has seven taluks, namely Kodaikanal, Oddanchatram, Palani, Nilakkottai, Vedasandur, Dindigul and Nattam. As per the 2001 India census, the district has a population of 1,923,014. It has a literacy rate of 69.83%, which is lower than the average in the state. The Palani and Kodaikanal taluks of this district are renowned tourist areas in South India. The district is well known for its lock and tannery industries. Other notable businesses are banana leaf commission; coconut powder exports, spinning mills and the like.
As per the 2001 India census, Batlagundu has a population of 22,007. Males make up 51% of the population and females amount to 49%. The town has a mean literacy rate of 76%, higher than the nationwide mean of 59.5%. 54% of the males and 46% of the females are literate. 9% of the population is children less than 6 years of age. The renowned patriot Shri. Subrahmanya Siva was born in this town. He chose Papparapatti village in Pennagaram taluk for his freedom fighting activities during his last years of life. Through his dramas and bhajans, he tried to bring about consciousness among the people about the traditional richness and culture. He was the writer of the journal Jnanabhanu. He authored the books Ramanuja Vijayam and Madhya vijayam. Notable personalities from this town are Venmani, Mullai Nadavarasu, Gnanasambantham and Dindigul Leony.
Batlagundu is famous for its basketball game. For every Pongal festival a national level basketball match is held. The cause behind this kind of interest for sport is the Stadium, which was built in the 60`s in the Government School in Batlagundu. The Ahamed Dental Clinic and Advanced Dental Care Centre was set up in this town in the year 2000 in order to bring many specialised dental treatments within the reach of the rural people.
