Famous for the temple of Goddess Bahucharaji, the town is 35kms. from Mehsana. There are three temples of the Goddess, of which two are termed 'Adyasthan' (the original site), and the center temple as a 'Madhyasthan'. The first of these encloses a Varkhadi tree from where the Goddess is supposed to have appeared. The little temple was built by Maratha Fadnis and the principal place of worship, the outer temple was built by Manajirao Gaekwad in 1781A.D. The Adyasthan contains the Sphathik Bala Yantra with gold cover. On every full moon day, the temple of the Goddess is visited by a bulky number of devotees and tonsorial ceremonies are performed.

Built outside Delhi Gate in 1850 by a rich Jain Merchant, this is the best known of Ahmedabad's many ornate Jain Temples.Built of pure white marble, it has a paved courtyard surrounded by an imposing row of cloisters containing 52 shrines, each with an image of a tirthankara, profusely decorated with rich carvings, one containing the marble image of the 15th tirthankar. The temple is a two storied structure with elaborate porches on three sides and front porch crowned by a large dome. It was designed by Premchand Salat and is dedicated to Dharmanath, the fifteenth Jina or Jain apostle.

Dating to the 12th-13th century, the Rukmini temple has beautiful carvings, specially on the pillars of the Sabha Mandapa. The temple was built in honour of Rani Rukmani, princess of Vidharba, who was to be married to Sishupala, but eloped with Lord Krishna

This small temple, 1.5km north of town, is an architectural masterpiece. Rukmini is the most important of Krishna's 16,108 wives. The temple walls are decorated with beautiful paintings depicting her pastimes with Krishna. This temple is said to date back to the 12th century.

The story behind this temple is that one day, Durvasa Muni, who is easily angered, was invited by Lord Krishna and his wife, Rukmini, to dinner. When a person is invited to dinner, etiquette dictates that the host should not eat until the guest has been satisfied. On the way to dinner, Rukmini became thirsty and asked Krishna for help. Krishna then put his foot in the ground and the Ganges waters flowed forth from the earth while Durvasa was not looking. As Rukmini was drinking the water, however, Durvasa turned and saw her drinking without his permission. He became angry and cursed her to live apart from Lord Krishna. That is why Krishna's temple is in the town and hers is located outside the town.

History of Daman

During the beginning of this millennium, the region in and around Daman was ruled by the Kushana Emperor. From the 8th to 13th century, Daman and Diu, which was a part of Goa was a stronghold of the Chowda Rajputs who were banished by the Waghalas who in turn were expelled by Muslims in 1330. History of Daman is quite fascinating for every historian across the world.

In the successive centuries between the 2nd Century BC and 13th Century AD, it is seen in the history of Daman that it formed a part of the kingdom known as Lata, one of the small kingdoms of the Aparant or Konkan Vaishaya and was ruled by the Rashtrakutas of Malkhed in the Deccan till AD 808. By 973, the power shifted to Tailapa II of the Chalukyas of Kalyani after his conquest of the Rashtrakuta kings. Tailapa II placed Lata in the charge of his relative, General Devarappa Chalukya.

Daman’s history also reflects that by the middle of the 13th century, a Rajput prince Ramasingh overpowered the Koli chief Nathoart of the Thorat tribe and established himself in the hilly tract at Asheri or Asserseta near Daman. The district of Daman including the coastal area from Surat to Mahim continued to be ruled by the chieftains of Ramnagar during the 14th century and in the initial years of the 15th century AD.

As per the historical background of Daman, it was acquired by the Portuguese in the 16th century after its prime importance on the maritime routes between East and West Asia was realized by them. They attacked Daman numerous times before it was ceded to them in a treaty with the Shah of Gujarat in 1559. It remained a major outpost of the Portuguese opium trade to China till the time the Portuguese remained a valid naval power. By the middle of the 16th century the Portuguese were able to seize Salcete and Bardez Talukas and the coastal areas, north of Bombay and the pockets of Daman and Diu.

Chorwad Beach

Chorwad is home to a palace which was constructed by Nawab Saheb Mohabbat Khan, the regional governor of his times. The memories of the yester years still haunt the Palace. However, it has now been transformed into an attractive resort.
