Chandigarh Facts
Chandigarh boasts the distinction of being the first planned city of India, which was designed by French Architect Le Corbusier. It is the only union territory in the country that serves as the capital city of two states, Punjab and Haryana. The city has a rich culture and tradition, with the diversity in people, religion, festivals and numerous folk dances. The people of Chandigarh are full of life and activity. The city is gradually gaining importance, both from commercial and tourism point of view. Chandigarh came into existence after the partition of India, which followed the independence of the country. On 1st November 1966, the city and the area surrounding it were constituted as a union territory, with the name Chandigarh being derived from the temple of Chandi, Mother Goddess of Power, situated nearby.
