Situated in the Saurashtra region of the state and around 302 km from Ahmedabad, Jamnagar is a historic city overflowing with many ornate and old buildings and colourful markets. The Jadeja Rajputs, known as Jams, built the 450-year-old city of Jamnagar around the Rammol Lake and the town is named after them. In the center of the lake is a small palace reached by a causeway. The town also has the only Ayurvedic University in the country and is famous for its pearl fisheries, tie-and-dye fabrics, and bandhini textile work.
Sightseeing Highlights
Two old structures namely Lakhota Fort and Kotha Bastion, located in the center of Old Jamnagar, on an island in the middle of a lake, are the main attractions here. The terrace of Lakhota Fort displays a fine collection of sculptures while the Kotha Bastion was Jamnagar's arsenal. Today, it displays a fine collection of sculptures, coins, inscriptions and copper plates and even the skeleton of a whale. The Pratap Vilas Palace is another attraction; it has a foreign architecture with Indian carvings that give it a totally distinct appeal.
