The magnificent Birla Mandir, built entirely out of marble from Rajasthan, stands proudly atop the Kala Pahad, the twin hillock of the Naubat Pahad. Built by Birla Foundation over a span of ten years, the main temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara. The enchanting temple stands aloft looking down over the azure-blue waters of the Hussain Sagar Lake, the serene and beautiful Lumbini Park and majestic government buildings and landscaped gardens. As you walk up the large steps leading up the hill to the temple premises, marble statues representing the Hindu pantheon welcome you. The architectural brilliance is manifested in the elegant blend of South Indian, Rajasthani and Utkal temple architectural styles. You enter the main temple through the four-tiered rajagopuram built in the garudalaya style of South Indian temples. The tower situated at the top of the principal deity called the Jagadananda vimanam is built in the Orissan style. Beautiful scenes from the great epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata are finely sculpted in pure white marble. An 11 ft tall idol of Lord Venkateswara has been carved out of granite stone. The Marble Lotus shaped canopy atop the idol the top of the idol looks stunning. The intricate carvings at the temple are a feast for the eyes. Early morning visitors to the temple are greeted with the soothing hymns of Tyagaraja and Ramadas. A temple visit in the early morning is a feast for the soul. By night Birla Mandir is a spectacular sight and offers you a panoramic view of the twin cities. No trip to Hyderabad would be complete without climbing the steps of Kala Pahad to Birla Mandir.
