Nalanda city is still revered by the educationists due to its highly acclaimed Nalanda University. Patna is the capital city rich in commercial propensity. Patna is the capital of the imperial city of Bihar which was once called Pataliputra. Patna is among the world`s oldest capital cities with an unbroken history of many centuries as imperial metropolis. The history and heritage of modern day Patna go back well over two millennia. Patna had been the regal seat of governance for successive kingdoms since ancient times. There are a number of places of interest in this capital city of Bihar. Nalanda city of Bihar is well known as the ancient seat of learning. The ruins of the world`s most ancient university, Nalanda University lies here which is 62 km from Bodh Gaya and 90 km south of Patna. Buddhism flourished in this city. In addition to the great ruins other places of interest are Nalanda museum and Nava Nalanda Mahavihar.

Rajgir city of Bihar is also noted for its historical importance. It was the first capital of the kingdom of Magadha. Rajgir is famous for rock-cut caves, forts, Buddhist ruins, shell inscriptions, Hindu and Jain temples and Muslim tombs. The city of Bodh Gaya in Bihar is one of the most important and sacred Buddhist pilgrimage centers in the world. The Mahabodhi temple of this city is renowned for its architectural splendour. The history of the city of Vaisali finds mention in the Mahabharata as well as in Buddhist and Jain tradition. Lord Mahavira, the founder of Jainism was born here and he spent most of his time here. The Relic Stupa and the Kutagarasala Vihara are the must visit places of the city. Palamau city of Bihar is among the first nine Tiger Reserves of the country. A ride into the Tiger Reserve is quite exciting and tourists from all across the globe visit the place.

Purnia is an important city of Bihar and the Purneswari Kali Mandir is regarded as a sacred place for pilgrimage. Kamakya Mandir is also a very famous temple of the city and people come here to seek the blessing of Goddess Kamakhya. Muzaffarpur is the largest city of north Bihar. It is also one of the oldest and largest trade centers in the entire state. Bhagalpur is another famous city in the state of Bihar. It is renowned worldwide for its silk production. Bhagalpur finds mention in the Ramayana and Mahabharata. In the epics the city is described as kingdom of Anga. The city was also a great center of learning. This is evident from the ruins of the ancient Vikramshila University, which is located 44 km east of Bhagalpur.
