Bhilai is the second-largest city in Chhattisgarh, located 22 km west of the capital Raipur on the Howrah-Mumbai rail line, and National Highway 6. Bhilai is best known for its Steel Plant, which is largest in India.

Bhilai has an average elevation of 293 m (961 ft). The economy of Bhilai is centered on the massive Bhilai Steel Plant, declared as one of the largest integrated steel plants in the world. Apart from this, Bhilai also boasts the Bhilai Refractories Plant (BRP), which is another public sector organization. Durg Railway Station connects the city to the rest of the country. It has five other small railway station sector-7 (Bhilai Nagar), bhilai Power house, Bhilai 3, charoda and kumhari.


Roads of Bhilai Township are very beautiful, well maintained and broad. The city has 4 flyovers and underbridges, which allows free movement of traffic anytime in the city. Within the town, the people depend mostly on own vehicles and hired auto rickshaws, which can only be hired only from a nearby auto stand. Tempos are diesel run three-wheelers that ply on the Great Eastern Highway and a central road called the Central Avenue, which runs parallel to the highway.

Bhilai also features some of the best schools in the country. This city is always famous for maximum number of candidates selected in engineering, medical, polytechnique, MBA and railway examinations as well. Bhilai is known for its pre-graduate education aimed at preparation for entrance examinations for Engineering. It has an average selection of about 40 students in IIT-JEE every year. Several coaching classes have flourished in Bhilai in overall higher education level. Bhilai Institute Of Technology or BIT-Durg, M.P.C.C.E. and Technology are the oldest and most admired engineering colleges in this region. Apart from this, there are numerous other private engineering colleges in the city. Bhilai is also famous for its Schools. It has got the best schools of Chhattisgarh. This steel city called Bhilainagar is a planned township, divided into 11 sectors. Bhilai is one of the most planned cities of India, falling in top 3 of the most planned cities list.

The culture in Bhilai is cosmopolitan due to the large-scale migration of people from all over the country. The major population is of localities of the state "Chhattisgarhi". Bhilai also boasts of high levels of linguistic and religious unity, which has been the hallmark of its culture since its inception. The local language is Chhattisgarhi, which is very similar to Hindi. All major festivals of Bhilai are celebrated in a scale similar to their region of origin. Like the Durga Puja celebrations of Bhilai are in tune with that in West Bengal.

Cheetal deer The places of tourist interest attract thousands of tourists all round the year. The Maitri Bagh is a zoo and a park established by the Bhilai Steel Plant. Large groups view the colorful musical fountain and the accompanying show during the evenings. Indira Place and Akash Ganga are the best places for shopping in Bhilai. Venktesh (Supela), Chandra & Maurya (G.E.Road Supela), Basant (Camp), Krisna (Risali) and Sapna (Power House) are some of the best theatres of Bhilai. Deobalod is situated about 3 km from Bhilai and is famous for Oldest Shiv Mandir. Tandula is 60 km away from the district of Durg and is famous for Dam on the river Tandula. This exciting picnic spot offers great accommodation at the rest house of irrigation department. Dhamdha is situated on the Durg-Bemetara road 35 km from the district of Durg. It is famous for Prachin Kila (Oldest Palace) and Mandir. Balod is famous for Prachin Kila (Oldest Palace), Mandir (Temples) and Sati Chabutra. Siyadevi in Bhilai is famous for Sita Maiya`s temple, situated in the heart of greenery of natural jungle.

Nagpura has been famous for Jain Temples and Pasharwanath Tirth. Kharkhara in Bhilai is famous for Dam on the river Kharkhara. The total length of the dam is 1128 m. Hajra Falls is a spectacular sight, crossing Dongargarh near Darekasa Railway station in Howrah Mumbai rail route. Situated amongst dense forests, hills and tunnels, this high falls is a visual delight for tourists. Barnawapara is a wild sanctuary and is home to Wild Buffalo, Leopard, Common Langur, Cheetal deer and other wild animals.
