Basna is a census town situated in the Mahasamund District in the state of Chhattisgarh in India. The administrative headquarters of the district are in the city of Mahasamund. The Mahasamund District spreads over an area of 3902.39 square km. The exact geographical location of the district is between 20°47` to 21°31`30" latitude and between 82°00` and 83°15`45" longitude. As boundaries, it has the Raigarh District and the Raipur District of Chhattisgarh and the Nuapara District and the Bargarh District of Orissa. In the district different types of rocks like granite, limestone, shale, sandstone, quartzite, dolerite and neo-granite are found in this region. 28.9% of the total population of the district is comprised of tribes. The tribes who live in the district are Bhujia, Kamar, Binjhwar, Dhanwar, Halba, Kanwar, Kharai, Munda, Pardhi, Bahalia, Saur, Saharia, Sonar, Sanwara and Kharwar.
The exact location of Basna is at 21.28° North and 82.82° East. It has a mean elevation of 266 metres (872 feet). Basna is at a distance of 136 km from Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh. It is at a distance of 15 km from the Orissa border. The famous place of Narsinghnath is only 30 km from Basna. Ram and Sita are believed to have stayed there during `vanvas` of 14 years. As per the 2001 India census, Basna has a population of 8813. Males make up 51% of the population and females comprise 49%. The average literacy rate of Basna is 69%, higher than the nationwide standard of 59.5%. 57% of the males and 43% of the females are literate. 14% of the population is children less than 6 years of age.
