Crown of Mihgty Empires
Dating back to sixth centuy, Patna is one of the oldest cities in India. Today it is the capital of Indian state of Bihar. What brings hordes of tourist to Patna is the rich and royal past of the city. However, only mere reflections of its past glory is evident today. Situated on the southern bank of River Ganges, it stretches for 15 Km and is among the least changed cities in centuries.
Its days of yore were when it was under the rule of one of the greatest kingdoms that India has seen. The rule of Mauryan Kingdom spanned for nearly 1000 years before losing its sheen. The first Mauryan King to set up his reign in the then Pataliputra was Chandragupta. But it was his grandson Ashoka who expanded the Kingdom to unimaginable measures. Ashoka also became instrumental in spreading Buddhism to different corners of India. The Mauryans built a Royal Highway to enhance Indo-Hellenic trade which connected Pataliputra to Taxila in Pakistan. This later came to be known as Grand Trunk Road.
Patna today is an important city of East India and gateway to many Buddhist pilgrim centers like Nalanda, Bodhgaya and Pawapuri. The best time to visit Patna is just after monsoon in the month of October to February.
