A famous landmark and a historical one too is the 10.6 meter tall sandstone pillar, the Ashoka Pillar located within the Allahabad Fort. It was built in 232 BC by Emperor Akbar and has many edicts inscribed on it. This pillar was later on earthed under the orders of Emperor Ashoka of the Mauryan Empire. Besides, the edicts are several other inscriptions of many other kings of those times. Some of them describe the glorious victories of King Samudragupta, a great Mauryan king while another Persian one is that of the Jahangir, the Mughal Emperor. Before you can visit this place, prior permission from the Commandant of the Ordinance Depot situated at the Fort is required.
