Jalpaiguri is a pretty town that still retains a lot of its colonial character. The town lies in the middle of the vast Terai plains, south of the Himalayas and is irrigated by innumerable rivers and streams flowing down from the Himalayas.

Jalpaiguri saw it’s heydays during the late 19th and early 20th century, when the British established tea gardens here. Even today, Jalpaiguri retains most of its colonial character with the core town remaining relatively unchanged after all these decades. A visit to the beautiful parks and gardens along the banks of the Karala is a lovely experience and you will get to see colonial Bengal in all its glory.

The picturesque town has several avenues lined with massive trees. As you walk through the town, you can catch a glimpse of snow-clad peaks of Kanchenjunga on a clear day. The tiny River Karala flows through the middle of the town bisecting it into two halves, thus earning the sobriquet, 'the Thames of Jalpaiguri'. The two banks of the river are connected with a few small beautifully laid bridges.

You can take a boat ride up the gentle Karala River all the way up to the confluence of Tista.

Enjoy the beauty of the well-maintained park by the side of the River, a beautiful place to spend some leisure hours and soak in the verdant beauty of the locale.
