A short drive away from Guntur and Vijayawada are the Undavalli caves, a striking specimen of Indian rock-cut architecture. The historic caves are located at the top of the high hills overlooking the Krishna River. Built during the 4th-5th century, their structure suggests that they were hewn out of solid rock on the hillside. Dedicated to Anantapadmanabha Swamy and Narasimha Swamy, Undavalli Cave Temples are associated with the Vishnukundina kings. According to the historical evidence, Madhava Reddy who ruled this region as the subordinate under the Reddies of Kondaveedu gifted the caves to the temple of Anantha Swamy.

It is also believed that Buddhist monks used these caves as rest houses. Though the caves comprise basically of temples, one can see a strong resemblance to the architectural and sculptural proficiency of a past Buddhist culture. Its impressive facade looms to 29 meters and widens to 16 meters. The amazing four-storey edifice looks magnificent amidst a lush green countryside.
