| The Ravadurg Gooty Fort is located at a distance of 52 kms, from Anantapur. One of the oldest hill forts of Andhra Pradesh; it is situated at a height of 300m above the plains in Gooty.
It has been referred to as the 'King of Forts' by Bukka, the Vijayanagar monarch. The Fort changed several hands from the Marathas to the Qutub Shahi chiefs. Then it was conquered by Haider Ali till it was finally taken over by the British.
The main citadel of the fort is constructed on the western circle of hillocks. The approach to the fort is by a paved path leading first to a strongly fortified spur which was known in former days as 'Mar Gooty'. After passing through the fortifications, the pathway climbs upward round steep sides of huge rock and reaches the peak where the citadel or 'qila' is situated. Built to resemble a shell, the Ravadurg Gooty Fort has 15 forts with 15 main doors ('Mukhadwaralu'). The fortifications include a series of walls connected by 14 gateways flanked by bastions. While the buildings in the fort are not of any architectural importance, there are two edifices and a small pavilion of polished lime stone on the edge of the cliff called Morari Rao's seat. This offers excellent view of the town below. |
