| The impressive structure of the Prakasam Barrage stretches 1223.5 meter long across the mighty Krishna River. The idea of constructing a barrage across Krishna River dates as far back as to 1798 but started taking shape in 1852 and was completed only in 1855. The Andhra Pradesh Government later constructed a new regulator cum-round bridge that was named after Sri Tanguturi Prakasam, the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Completed in 1957, it helps irrigate over 12 lakhs acres of agricultural land. The Krishna delta has been transformed into the granary of Andhra Pradesh thanks largely to the Prakasam Barrage Project. The gentle breeze, the shimmering waters of the lake and a panoramic view of the river has made this a popular tourist attraction of Vijayawada. The beautiful lake and its three canals that crisscross across the city gives Vijayawada quite the Venetian touch! |
