This is probably one of the few zoos where animals have spacious habitats coupled with aesthetic sense. This zoo was built by His Highness Sri Chamarajendra Wodeyar in the year 1892. This was the Palace zoo and he made sure everything was tuned to perfection. Many years later, the zoo was renamed as “Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens” to commemorate the illustrious founder. He took special interest in the management of the zoo and provided specialised animal care. The zoo boasts of various species of herbivorous and carnivorous animals and lays a lot of emphasis on the health care of the animals. In fact they are equipped with a world class veterinary hospital, laboratory, nursing yard, pharmacy and operation theatre. They also encourage research activities. For getting maximum benefit from a visit to the zoo, one should try to make it before 12’ O clock. A visit in the evening especially after 4.00 p.m. is not ideal. You will be deprived from the viewing many of the animal, as most of them withdraw to their enclosures for feeding. Further, all the animals will not be active always and hence visitors should not expect them to be moving around often – jumping and running. Even in nature, most of the time almost all animals lay down relax, quite contrary to what one might see in a film or read in a story.
