If you are at Chennai, a trip to this famous beach is a must. This beach is said to be amongst the longest beaches in Asia with a 13 km long stretch of golden sands lining the city's east coast, from Fort St. George all the way to Mahabalipuram. The beach front is lined with beautiful statues, historic buildings and monumental edifices which are government offices and educational institutions. Lovely artificial fountains set against landscaped gardens and parks add to the charm of the beach front. At the crack of dawn, you will find joggers and fitness enthusiasts working out on the beach. By day, a swimming pool and an aquarium located opposite the Presidency college is a great attraction for tourists. As the evening sets, families and groups of friends arrive here to spend a cool evening, away from the dust and noise of the city. The beautiful sun set from the beach is an enthralling sight. Visitors to the beach seem undeterred by warning notices against swimming because of the strong undercurrents. They love venturing into the sea and battling the waves. In the evenings, the beach virtually transforms into an entertainment arcade with pony rides and small games. Vendors and hawkers ply their wares from shells and baubles to kites and knick knacks. Food stalls do brisk business, selling a variety of delicious local fare by the dim lights of oil lanterns.
