The Kapaleeswara Temple is situated in Mylapore and is dedicated to Lord Siva. This ancient 8th Century Pallava temple was built in the typical Dravidian style of architecture with its tall 'Gopuram' (tower) covered with beautiful carvings depicting the tales of Hindu mythology.

Dedicated to Lord Siva, the temple has some exquisite sculptures including 63 bronze idols of Saivaite Saints. The idols of the Nayanmars or Saivaite Saints adorn the outer courtyard and are said to be rare specimens. The courtyard also has a small shrine under an old Punnai tree, depicting Goddess Parvati in the form of a peacock or 'MAYIL' and worshipping Lord Siva. It is from this legend that MYLAPORE derived its name.

During the Arubathumoovar festival, the temple springs to life with colour as thousands of devotees throng to the ancient shrine to offer their prayers, bearing flowers and fruit.
