In 1930 the late Maharaja Birbikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur built this magnificent lake palace as his summer resort, in the middle of the Rudrasagar lake. The Maharaja commissioned Martin & Burn Co. to construct the palace; to date it is the only lake palace in East India.

Built in a blend of Hindu and Mughal architectural styles, the palace is divided into two mahals - one on the western side known as Andar Mahal which was used by the royal family and another on the eastern side which was used for the security personnel and servants. Andar Mahal has 15 rooms with a beautifully landscaped garden and an open stage where music and theatre performances would be held.

The palace is lit by flood lights in the evening adding to its magical appearance.
