This quaint city is closely related to the city of Nagpur and derives its name from the Wardha river that flows through the north, west and south boundaries of this district. It was a sister city to Sevagram and played a significant role in the Indian independence movement. Even before that Wardha had changed hands from the Mauryas, Sungas, Satyahanas and Vakatakas in its early days to the Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas and the Delhi and Bahmani Sultanates before the Marathas and the British.
