A deep valley on three sides and a thickly wooded lush green forest on the other surround the Rajmachi Fort. Unlike many other forts, this one can only be reached on foot, as a consequence of its quaint location. Since it looks exactly like its right out of a picture postcard, the walk till the fort is usually extremely exhilarating and overwhelmingly picturesque. Located at a distance of about 10 km away from Lonavala, this old fort probably belongs to the Yadav period and has two small forts attached to it, called 'Shrivardhan' and 'Manoranjan'. Shrivardhan and Manoranjan are connected by a small plateau between them. Shrivardhan is the 'Bale killa' of Rajmachi, standing tall at a height of about 3000 feet, and was mainly built to keep a watch on the Konkan area. The other fort, Manoranjan, is 2700 feet high and consists of strong walls and many water tanks. The historic fort has a rich treasure of monuments including ramparts, gateways, water reservoirs, idols of deities, and temples. The old caves of 'Kondhavi' on Rajmachi fort are worth a look. From the fort, one can also see the Ulhas River, Duke’s Nose, Karnala, Matheran, Mahuli and Bhimashankar. The way to the fort is long but truly spectacular with a spellbinding view. A hotspot for avid trekkers, this is one trail even beginners love to embark upon. While anytime of the year is good to visit Rajmachi Fort, the most recommended season is monsoon, when the place is surrounded with gurgling waterfalls and luscious greenery and blossoming flowers.
