Sri Ranganatha Temple

Like most places that have a temple / place of worship which the local people believe is responsible for their well-being, Lord Ranganatha reseides in the hearts of those who live in Srirangapatna. The temple is the abode of Lord Vishnu as Sri Ranganatha swamy. The lord is resting on adhi sesha here and the temple is on Kaveri banks. The temple has a big Gopuram (Tower) and huge walls surrounding it depicting ancient architecture. Srirangapatna is among the Pancharanga kshetram (Five holy places where Lord Ranganatha resides) along the river Kaveri, others being Srirangam, Tiruvindalur, Kumbakonam and Koyiladi. The temple of Lord Sriranganatha is said to have been built by the Chieftain Thirumalaiah in 894 AD. It consists of a Mahadwara with a huge tower & a pillared hall built in three or four different stages, Sukanasi & Garbhagriha. There are many other shrines inside the enclosure. Inside the Garbhagriha (Cell) is a colossal image of Vishnu reclining on the huge coils of the great snake Ananta. The sleeping position of the deity makes it even more interesting to the tourist.
