The Mookambika Devi Temple stands on the spur of the lush green Kodachadri peak overlooking the Sauparnika river. It is visited by millions of devotees from Karnataka and Kerala as well as the rest of India. Considered to be one of the seven Muktistala pilgrimage sites in Karnataka, the Mookambika Temple idol is said to have been installed by the vedic scholar and Hindu saint, Adi Shankara. That idol is now confined in a copper roofed and gold crested temple.

The deity, which is regarded as a manifestation of Shakti, Saraswathi and Mahalakshmi, is in the form of Jyotir-Linga incorporating both Shiva and Shakti. There is an exquisite sculpture of Panchamukha Ganesha here.

The other Muktistala sites in Karnataka are Udupi, Subrahmanya, Kumbasi, Kodeshwara, Sankaranarayana and Gokarna.
