| Located at a distance of 17 km from Coonoor, Droog Fort is also referred to as Bakasura Malai referring to the legend from the Mahabharata of the insatiatable demon Bakasura who was vanquished by Bheema. The approach to the Droog Fortess is through the Nonsuch Estate and involves a downward trek for about 4 km. Though the fortress is now reduced to a dilapidated structure, it is said that during Tipu Sultan's reign, this fort served as an outpost.
The peak on which the Droog Fort is built stands at an elevation of about 2,000 m and offers a good view of the plains below. |
