10 kms south of Kozhikode at the mouth of the Chaliyar River is the ancient shipbuilding port of Beypore. Historically, Beypore was an important port and harbour as well as a trade and maritime centre during the days of the early Arab and Chinese travelers. Later it began to flourish as a centre for shipbuilding and was in great demand by merchants from Western Asia. The boat-building yard at Beypore was famous especially for its traditional Uri or the Arabian trading vessel. The traditional shipbuilders known as Khalasis were famed for their exceptional craftsmanship. The historic boat-building yard still stands as a mute testimony to a great bygone era. The interested can still watch the creative process of building the Uri at the shipyard. The Beypore beach with its palm fringed shores and sea waves lapping against the coast makes a picture perfect setting for a weekend getaway. The pristine beach is unpolluted and relatively secluded. A 2 km long stretch of land reaches out into the sea. The path is made up of huge boulders and opens out in the sea. Pick your way amongst the rocks and find yourself a secluded spot to watch the beautiful sunset. For the adventurous, there are water sports facilities on the beach. For a truly unique experience, set out into the sea with the local fishermen and watch as they reel in their catch and earn their livelihood. Adventurous food lovers will enjoy the delectable freshly cooked seafood delicacies at the several seaside stalls. Vendors sell sweet tender coconut water that makes a real refreshing drink. One of the major attractions at the beach is the 2 km long stone bridge. The Beypore Beach is an absolute must see if you are in the vicinity of Kozhikode.
