| Even though the temple or 'mutt' complex of Saint Sri Raghavendra attracts a lot of visitors, they are mostly believers, not casual tourists. In the evening on special occasions, chariots carrying the deity are taken around the temple and the temple elephants pay obeisance to the deity. It is quite a spectacular sight. There are three chariots, one plated in gold, the other in silver and the third in sandalwood. This is where the prominent saint Sri Raghavendra attained samadhi from this world. There is a belief that the Saint still exists in his Holy form after he had relinquished the material world and that he will continue to dwell in this form till the point of time which marks the completion of 700 years from the time he attained ‘Jeeva Samathi’. Sri Raghavendra (1601-1671) advocated Vaishnavism and Dvaita philosophy. Many consider him to be a reincarnation of Prahlada, the devotee who was rescued by Lord Vishnu in the avatar of Narasimha. The Saint is said to have performed many miracles during his lifetime. | |
