Mysore Palace

Mysore Palace

Mysore-6092_0.jpg
The Mysore Palace stands in the heart of the city and is a reminder of the affluence of the former rulers, the Maharajas of Mysore. The palace has faced upheaval and destruction at many points in its history, but has been rebuilt or renovated to maintain its grandeur every time.
The present palace, which is actually the fourth to occupy this location, was designed by a British architect called Henry Irwin. Its precursor was destroyed by fire in 1897. The Mysore Palace, as we see it today, was completed in 1912. It is a masterpiece of Indo-Saracenic architecture and is on par with the great Mughal residencies of North India and the stately colonial buildings of South India.
It is now a museum which has on display the artefacts of the erstwhile royalty and houses items from the personal collection of Tipu Sultan and his dynasty.
