| The Mahabaleshwara Temple is one of the most beautiful temples in Mysore. The ancient Mahabaleshwara Temple atop the Chamunda Hills is one of the most visited religious destinations in the state of Karnataka. It was in fact, the most important temple of the area before the Kings of Mysore started promoting the Chamundeshwari Temple. Mahabaleshwara Temple in Mysore is one of the oldest temples of the state and records mention of its existence since the 10th century.
According to historical findings, the temple was expanded by various kings in different periods. King Vishnuvardhana of Hoysala and his successors contributed the Nava Ranga, Ardha Mantapa to the temple. Even the images of Bhairavi, Nataraja, Sapta Matrikas and Parvathi are believed to be built during the Hoysala period. However the image of Vishnu was created during the Ganga period.
The rear side of the Mahabaleshwara Temple again reminds of the Ganga period with statues of Mahishamardini and Dakshnia Murthy that were built in that time. There are also images of Lord Indra and Bhilkshatana Shiva. Interestingly, these images were made in the Chola style. The Mahabaleshwara Temple of Mysore attracts a large number of devotees and pilgrims every year and especially during the festive seasons. The ancient flavour of the temple and its noteworthy history has made a hot destination for pilgrims as well as tourists. Festivals are also celebrated on a grand scale here. |
