One of the major sightseeing points in Goa is the Basilica of Bom Jesus containing the remnants of St. Francis Xavier. The church, situated in old Goa, is only 25 km away from the state capital Panjim (Panaji). “Bom Jesus” is the term generally used for infant Jesus, which literally translates to good / holy Jesus. Considered to be one of the finest examples of the “baroque architecture”, the church holds the distinction of being the first Minor Basilica in India.
The church, built in 1605, has gained reputation due to the fact that St. Francis Xavier was known to have miraculous curative powers. Pilgrims from around the world comes here throughout the year to see the remains of the Saint. At every 10 years, the church authority conducts a solemn display of the saint’s body to the public.
