| The Golconda fort is one of the most magnificent fortress complexes in India. The history of Golconda Fort dates back to the early 13th century and tells a rich and riveting story that spans several centuries and dynasties. The complex consists of four distinct forts with a 10km long outer wall. The short drive to the fort is exhilarating and the visitor is usually swept away by the colossal grandeur of the gigantic fort. To do justice to your tour of the historical Golconda Fort, you could engage the services of one of the many government appointed Guides. You enter by the ?Fateh Darwaza? or Victory gate, so named after Aurangzeb?s triumphant army marched in through this gate. You will be amazed at the unique acoustical effects here. Clap your hands as you stand below the dome and hear the reverberations clearly at 'Bala Hisar', the highest point almost a kilometer away. Though an amusing diversion for visitors today, it served as a communication signal to the guards in times of imminent danger. Also worth a visit are the royal Nagina Gardens, the Bodyguards, Barracks, and the three water tanks, which once formed part of an intricate water system in the fort. Perched at the top of a thousand step stairway hewn out of stone is the Durbar Hall. If you are prepared to accomplish this rigorous climb, you will be amply rewarded with one of the best views of the twin cities. A story about a secret underground tunnel leading from the 'Durbar Hall' to one of the palaces at the foot of the hill adds to the mythical charm of the Fort complex. The 'Kohinoor' diamond is said to have come from here. An absolute must see is the Sound and Light show that brings the legend of Golconda to life. As the sun sets over the hills, you are treated to an audio visual treat. The show spans centuries and showcases the grandeur of the erstwhile dynasties that flourished and fell at the Golconda Fort. |
