| 24 kms out of Vishakapatnam is the picture perfect seaside resort of Bheemunipatnam popularly known as 'Bhimli'. The hour long drive to Bhimli is a truly exhilarating one. The beach road (supposedly the longest beach road in India) is flanked by lush green hilly terrain on one side and a vast expanse of golden sand leading into the azure blue sea on the other. As you approach Bhimli, you are treated to the spectacular view of a picturesque palm fringed beach, a sprinkling of fishermen’s huts interspersed between mounds of red sand and fishing boats moored on the seashore. Legend has it that the evil Bakasura was slain by the Pandava prince Bheema at this spot. The region has a rich historical background and was occupied by different empires over the centuries - the Kalingas, Pallavas of Kanchi, Cholas of Tanjore and the Qutubshahs of Golconda till it fell into the hands of Dutch settlers. The once flourishing town of Bhimlipatnam has now been reduced to a small fishing village with scattered habitation. There is much to do for the tourist here. Explore the crumbling ruins of the 17th century Dutch fort. Walk around the Dutch cemetery, shut out from the world by high walls. The cemetery is situated at the mouth of the river Gosthani and has a handful of tombs, some of which are embossed with the skull and cross bones motif of sea pirates. The beautiful beach at Bhimli is considered to be one of the safest for swimmers. Get caressed by the cool sea breeze as you bask in the sun. The beach is very popular for its gently sloping sands. The beach is the nerve centre of Bhimli. You will find vendors selling a variety of fruits and eatables. Sellers of knick-knacks line the periphery of the beach. Enjoy some delicious varieties of fresh prawn and pomfret available at the small stalls that have sprung up all around the beach. |
