Located on the left bank of River Godavari in East Godavari district, Rajahmundry has an old history. Its ancient name was Raja Mahendri and it was built as a capital city by the Chalukya Kings in the 11th century. Today it has several ruins of palaces and fort walls. New archeological excavations even suggest that the city may have been in existence far before the Chalukyas. It is also the birthplace of Nannayya, the poet laureate or 'Adi Kavi' (first poet) of Telugu.
