| Situated at a distance of 50 km from Rajahmundry, Adurru is located in Razole taluk. The village lies on the west bank of the Vainetaya branch of Godavari River and is 9.5 km. from the sea.
In 1953, the Archaeological Survey of India conducted excavations here that brought to light the remains of Buddhist stupas, chaityas and viharas. Amidst these, the most notable is the Mahastupa, which is built like a giant wheel and is 17 feet in diameter with a raised platform. The excavations unearthed remnants spread across an area of approximately 2.04 acres. Several artefacts like jars, troughs, dishes and bowls of red and kaolin pottery were unearthed. The mound of Adurru is popularly known as the Dubaraju Gudi by the local people. Adurru is a renowned centre of Buddhist interest and well worth a visit if you are a history buff. |
